No fewer than 10 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Plateau State.
The fatal crash reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at about 12:12 a.m., and involved four vehicles—two articulated trucks and two Ford Galaxy minibuses.
Eyewitnesses told PUNCH that the collision was severe, resulting in the immediate death of 10 victims, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured were promptly rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Confirming the incident, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, disclosed that all the deceased were adult males.
In an official statement, the FRSC said its Plateau State Sector Command carried out a rescue operation after the crash, which occurred shortly after a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Jos, the state capital.
According to the statement, a total of 19 persons were involved in the accident—17 males and two females. While 10 adult men died on the spot, the injured victims were taken to General Hospital, Miango; Jos University Teaching Hospital; and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for treatment.
The FRSC added that eight bodies were deposited at the morgues of Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, while two corpses were claimed by officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for burial.
The rescue operation, the agency noted, was jointly carried out by personnel of the FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Military, and members of the local community.
Preliminary investigations revealed that speeding and reckless driving, leading to loss of control, were the major causes of the crash, while further investigations are still ongoing.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, commended members of the public who promptly alerted security agencies and urged motorists to avoid night journeys, excessive speeding, and other dangerous driving habits.
He also warned drivers against operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, illness, or fatigue, describing these as leading contributors to fatal road accidents.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, Mogaji noted that the crash occurred barely 12 days after eight University of Jos students lost their lives in a similar accident. He therefore called on Nigerians to take personal safety seriously and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
The FRSC commander further advised members of the public to report road crashes and emergencies through the agency’s toll-free emergency number, 122.
Tuesday’s incident is reported to be the second major road accident in Plateau State within two weeks, following an earlier crash that claimed the lives of eight University of Jos students along Zaria Road in Jos.
