Victor Osimhen couldn’t hide his emotions on Tuesday night after captaining Nigeria for the first time in a competitive match, describing the moment as a childhood dream fulfilled. The Super Eagles secured a 3-1 victory over Uganda in their Group C clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 27-year-old striker donned the captain’s armband after head coach Éric Chelle rested regular captain Wilfred Ndidi. Osimhen, named vice-captain just days before the tournament, led Nigeria with authority, guiding the team past the Cranes with composure and skill.
“It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching the Super Eagles,” Osimhen said after the match, clearly proud of the honour of leading the three-time African champions.
The Super Eagles under Osimhen’s leadership showed maturity and control, keeping Uganda at bay and maintaining their strong start in the tournament. Fans and teammates praised his calm authority and tireless work rate on the pitch.
Beyond his captaincy duties, Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess continues to shine. The Galatasaray striker now has 32 goals for Nigeria, inching closer to Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing record of 37 goals.
Despite the impressive tally, Osimhen remains focused on team success rather than personal records. “The captaincy today gave me a strong sense of belonging. I’m not thinking about equaling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,” he told reporters.
“I am trying to fight for my team, to get goals, assists, but yes, hopefully not this AFCON and maybe not the qualifiers, but one day I know I am going to get there.”
