New Year Crossover: Adamawa, Lagos Scrap December 31 Celebrations

The Adamawa State Government has announced the cancellation of the December 31 Cross Over Night activities initially scheduled to take place at the Unity Flyover in Jimeta, Yola, the state capital.

The decision was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, emphasizing that public safety and protection of lives and property remain the government’s top priority.

“The Adamawa State Government has cancelled all activities planned for the Cross Over Night on Dec. 31, 2025, to Jan. 1, 2026, at the Unity Fly-Over in Jimeta, Yola,” the statement read.

Wonosikou further assured that the government will continue to collaborate with security agencies to maintain peace and stability across the state.

“The safety and security of citizens remain our top priority. The government will continue to work with security agencies to ensure peace and stability in the state,” he added.

Residents, particularly in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas, were advised to stay vigilant, avoid crowded places, and report any suspicious activities.

“Citizens are urged to avoid any potential risks and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities,” the statement said.

This announcement follows a similar move by the Lagos State Government, which recently cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, scheduled for December 31. In place of the annual celebration, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged residents to spend the period in personal prayers for the nation, the state, and the people of Lagos.

“Mr Governor has urged Lagosians to spend quality time in personal prayers for the nation, the state and the people of Lagos,” the statement read.

Sanwo-Olu encouraged prayers for prosperity, peace, leadership, and general well-being, describing 2026 as a year full of promise for both Lagos State and Nigeria. He also urged residents to continue living in peace and harmony while wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.
