Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has described the defection of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Peter Obi, alongside other political leaders from the South-East, officially joined the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State. The group explained that their decision was driven by the need to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Obi emphasized the importance of opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections, urging leaders to collaborate under the banner of the ADC, headed by David Mark, to bring meaningful change to the country.
Reacting to Obi’s move, Atiku shared a post on 𝕏, welcoming him into the party and expressing optimism about the future of the opposition. He wrote:
"Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, @PeterObi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people. And as the @ADCNig Coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the Southeast region, I hope this inspires other patriots to join the cause with the train headed in their direction."
