A political support group associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has distanced itself from his son, Abba Atiku Abubakar, following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naija News reports that the group took the decision after rejecting Abba’s call for its members and coordinators to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and align with the ruling APC.
Abba formally defected to the APC on Thursday, January 18, 2026, where he urged members of his political structure to join him in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
However, the group, known as the Atiku Haske Organisation, said Abba lacks the authority to determine its political direction or issue instructions on its behalf. It also rejected his proposal to rename the organisation in support of President Tinubu, describing the idea as contrary to its collective resolutions.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the group’s initiator and convener, Mai Nagge Bakari, clarified that Abba was neither a founder nor a key stakeholder in the organisation.
Bakari explained that Abba was merely invited to join the group and did not contribute financially to its formation, registration, or activities. He added that Abba does not possess any of the group’s official documents.
Based on these grounds, the organisation announced Abba’s removal from its membership, stressing that it is not obligated to follow directives from him.
The group further reaffirmed that it had earlier resolved to move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and has no intention of defecting to any other political party.
Describing Abba’s defection as a clear departure from its shared principles, the organisation reiterated its loyalty to Atiku Abubakar, stating that he remains the political figure who best represents its vision and aspirations.
The group declared Abba’s directive null and void and warned him against presenting himself as a member or spokesperson of the organisation.
Abba Atiku Abubakar announced his defection to the APC at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, where he was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other APC leaders from the North-East. During the event, he pledged support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid and commended the current administration.
