The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed concerns over the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the opposition party may not secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during his end-of-year media chat, Wike attributed PDP’s possible failure in 2027 to what he described as poor and unfocused leadership within the party. The former Governor of Rivers State stressed that PDP currently lacks the direction and commitment needed to return to power.
According to him, only a strong, united and visionary leadership can reposition the party for success, suggesting that PDP may need to start rebuilding now to stand a real chance by 2031.
He said:
“We have a leadership that is not focused, a leadership that does not know what to do, a leadership that does not consider suggestions.
If the leadership is committed, I will come back to say—look, we have made a mistake, why are things happening this way? What can we do to correct it?
It is not just about taking over government; we must position ourselves effectively.
By 2027, it’s likely that we may not make it. But are we going to allow the party to die? Can’t we start rebuilding now ahead of 2031?”
Wike emphasized that his earlier warnings about the party’s direction were ignored and insisted that leadership remains the most important factor in determining PDP’s survival and relevance.
“There is nothing impossible once you are committed. I have warned that if things are not done in the right way, this is where we will find ourselves. Leadership is crucial in everything we do—both in associations and in government.
If leaders do not make the right decisions, we will face the consequences.”
