Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has reaffirmed his full commitment to Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, declaring his readiness to play in any position if it helps the team achieve success.
The 28-year-old FC Nantes defender has emerged as one of the senior figures in the national team following the retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong. The upcoming tournament will mark Awaziem’s fourth AFCON appearance, having previously featured at the 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions.
Awaziem was part of the Super Eagles squad that claimed bronze in Egypt and also featured in the team that finished runners-up at the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Drawing from those experiences, the former CD Leganés defender said individual roles are secondary when national glory is on the line.
“If the coach wants me to be a goalkeeper, I’m ready. If he wants me to be a striker, I’m ready,” Awaziem told Elegbete TV.
Leading Nigeria’s title push is star striker Victor Osimhen, who has urged his teammates to approach the tournament with hunger, discipline and total commitment from the opening whistle.
Speaking to Pooja Media, Osimhen described the competition as a major opportunity for the Super Eagles to claim continental glory.
“This AFCON is an opportunity for us to do well and try to make sure that we win the tournament,” he said.
“It won’t be easy. We have to fight for every game and every ball.
“We must try to win every match and see if we can reach the final and lift the trophy.”
Osimhen will be aiming to inspire Nigeria to go one step further than their second-place finish in Côte d’Ivoire, as the Super Eagles begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23.
