The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly rejected the Federal Government’s recently published terrorism sponsors list, describing it as “a theatre of absurdity and state-sponsored deception.”
In a press statement issued on April 13, 2026, IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said the group reviewed the list and concluded that it was a “desperate and intellectually bankrupt exercise” aimed at misleading the public and the international community.
The group, led by Nnamdi Kanu, accused the Nigerian government of hypocrisy, alleging that authorities who have been accused of using force against unarmed civilians now seek to define terrorism.
IPOB further argued that the list was not about national security but an attempt to intimidate and silence dissenting voices, particularly those advocating for self-determination in the South-East region.
The statement referenced past incidents, including the handling of protests and the continued detention of Kanu, claiming these actions contradict the government’s position on terrorism.
The pro-Biafra group insisted that it remains a peaceful, people-driven movement and denied any involvement in terrorist activities. It also maintained that no Igbo individual should be labeled a sponsor of terrorism.
According to IPOB, efforts to portray the group negatively on the international stage would not succeed, especially in countries where it claims to operate lawfully.
“The struggle for justice, dignity, and self-determination is not a crime—it is a right,” the statement added.
The group concluded by stressing that what it described as “demonization and propaganda” would not halt its agitation, reiterating that its demand for self-determination remains non-negotiable.
The Federal Government is yet to officially respond to IPOB’s latest reaction at the time of filing this report.
