Iliman Ndiaye emerged as Senegal’s match-winner on a dramatic AFCON night, scoring the decisive goal before Mali were reduced to ten men just moments before halftime.
The only goal of the encounter came in the 27th minute when Ndiaye kept his composure to finish clinically, rounding off a dominant spell of pressure from Aliou Cissé’s side. Senegal controlled proceedings for much of the first half, dictating the tempo and enjoying the bulk of possession as Mali struggled to gain a foothold.
Senegal’s advantage was further strengthened in first-half stoppage time after Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma was shown a second yellow card, leaving his side to play the remainder of the contest with ten men.
Despite the setback, Mali showed commendable spirit after the restart, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Tactical changes brought renewed energy, but clear-cut chances remained scarce as Senegal’s well-organised defence, led by Kalidou Koulibaly, stood firm.
The Teranga Lions continued to threaten at the other end, registering 18 attempts on goal, with nine efforts testing the Mali goalkeeper. The closing stages were tense and physical, as several bookings underlined the fierce nature of the contest, but Senegal remained resolute to secure the victory.
The win seals Senegal’s place in the AFCON semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Egypt and Ivory Coast. That tie is set for Saturday, January 10, at 8 p.m., with Senegal scheduled to return to action in the semi-finals on Wednesday, January 14.
