Niger Delta rights activist, Annkio Briggs, has stated that the people of Rivers State want Governor Siminalayi Fubara to continue in office beyond 2027.
Naija News reports that Briggs made the assertion while reacting to the ongoing impeachment controversy involving Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Briggs stressed that the authority to determine who governs Rivers State lies solely with the people, not the lawmakers.
According to her, members of the State House of Assembly do not possess the power to decide who the electorate should vote for in future elections.
She said the people of Rivers State remain the ultimate custodians of political power and will decide their leader at the polls.
Briggs also cautioned the federal government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to tread carefully, noting that political decisions taken now could affect the party’s chances in future elections.
She pointed out that since Governor Fubara has been welcomed into the APC — a party to which members of the Rivers State House of Assembly also belong — the party must be mindful of its actions.
According to Briggs, the APC needs to be strategic in its approach as it prepares for upcoming elections, especially in winning the trust and votes of the people of Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.
