Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that his name was included on a list of individuals marked for elimination alongside members of the Boko Haram terrorist group.
Gumi made the claim while addressing his congregation, saying he received a phone call in the early hours of the morning from a security source in Abuja, who briefed him on deliberations allegedly held during a high-level security meeting.
According to the cleric, the caller informed him that his name was mentioned among those purportedly slated for assassination.
“They called me from Abuja and told me there was a security meeting. They said my name had been mentioned and that I would be eliminated. They mentioned Boko Haram as well,” Gumi said.
He questioned the identity of those described as terrorists, insisting that external forces were responsible for the ongoing crisis.
“Even the Americans claim they came to fight terrorism, so who are the terrorists? They are the ones,” he added.
Gumi went further to accuse the United States of contributing to the emergence and persistence of the Boko Haram insurgency, claiming that bombings and violence were part of a wider agenda.
He also alleged that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and deepening social divisions were fuelled by false narratives, destruction, and policies he attributed to former United States President, Donald Trump.
According to him, Nigeria’s political leaders and religious scholars failed to speak out as the country slipped further into crisis.
“Because of lies, violence was introduced. Where are the leaders? What did they do? Where are the scholars? Everyone has retreated to their corners,” he said.
The cleric further claimed that foreign-backed narratives and financial interests had portrayed Christians as the sole victims of insecurity, thereby creating mistrust and division among Nigerians.
Gumi argued that no sovereign nation would accept external interference designed to divide its people along religious or social lines.
“Which country would agree to something that divides its people? No nation would accept that. It would either insist on unity or reject such interference completely,” he said.
He accused both political and religious elites of abandoning dialogue, saying Nigerians were now facing hardship, oppression, and denial of basic rights.
“You brought hardship upon us, you broke the people, you oppressed them and denied them their rights,” he said, lamenting what he described as the labelling of regions along religious lines.
Gumi warned that fear, silence, and growing division were pushing Nigeria backwards, stressing that continued inaction by leaders and clerics would only worsen the nation’s challenges.
“This is the situation we have found ourselves in, and it is dragging the country down,” he added.
