The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has disclosed that he would only consider leaving the party if he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso also strongly criticised reports suggesting that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such a move as a betrayal of trust.
Speaking to NNPP supporters at his residence in Kano on Wednesday, the former governor said his over 40 years in politics would not allow him to defect to another party without a serious and dignifying offer.
According to him, although the APC approached him to join the party, he rejected the proposal because it lacked clarity and concrete benefits for both himself and his political structure.
“We told them we could consider it, but what exactly are you offering? Is it appointments? How many? Which one suits me? Which will also suit the national chairman and his executives, who are people of value?” Kwankwaso asked.
“They had no answers,” he added.
Kwankwaso emphasised that his supporters nationwide would only back any political realignment that secures him one of the top two positions in the 2027 race. He said anything less would amount to political humiliation after decades of grassroots mobilisation and national relevance.
The former senator reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to the Kwankwasiyya ideology, which he said is centred on lifting the poor and empowering young people.
He explained that the ideology prioritises job creation, access to education, economic growth, quality healthcare, and agricultural development.
“Some people think this is about having multiple options, but this time it is a national matter. Kano State must remain united so that we can succeed again in the next elections,” he stated.
Kwankwaso Blasts Gov Yusuf Over Alleged APC Defection
Reacting to reports that Governor Abba Yusuf may defect to the APC, Kwankwaso said he was shocked and deeply disappointed.
He accused the governor of failing to consult him or provide any reasonable explanation for the alleged decision.
“This should serve as a lesson to all of us. We believed everyone understood the mission. We never expected betrayal,” he said.
Kwankwaso lamented that after years of struggle to reclaim Kano from the APC, Yusuf’s reported defection could undo all the hard work.
“After everything we did to rescue Kano from Ganduje and the APC, you have now handed the governorship back to them without a fight,” he stated.
He, however, urged his supporters to remain calm and avoid confrontation, encouraging them to respond with prayers instead.
“Our instruction is simple: continue praying for them. And if any of you have access to them, tell them to stop,” he added.
These comments come amid growing political realignments as parties intensify early moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
