The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has debunked claims suggesting that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may settle for a vice-presidential position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, Tanko stated clearly that Obi’s political ambition remains unchanged — he is focused solely on becoming President of Nigeria.
Quoting Obi, Tanko said:
“He did not go around the world to become a vice president. He went around the world to learn so that he can be number one — to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Tanko stressed that the Obidient movement fully stands behind Obi and will follow him wherever his political journey leads.
“As far as we are concerned, we are interested in running for the presidency, and anywhere Mr Peter Obi goes, we the Obidient will go with him,” he added.
Obi’s Chances In 2027 – “He Has A Fantastic Chance”
On Obi’s chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, Tanko expressed confidence, noting that the Labour Party politician now has more nationwide structure and stronger support than he did when he contested in 2023.
“Let me be modest — he has a very fantastic chance. This is somebody who was not given any chance in 2023 and still ended up with what we believe was a winning election,” Tanko said.
He further stated that many Nigerians are frustrated with the APC-led government and are looking for a credible alternative.
“Nigerians are tired. They are looking for somebody who has the capacity, the consistency, the credibility and the character to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria,” he added.
